OPPO embraces Ultra HDR, putting its ProXDR display technology under pressure
Google’s open Ultra HDR format could make OPPO’s proprietary ProXDR less important, but there is no evidence that OPPO is abandoning it yet.

OPPO appears to be embracing Google’s Ultra HDR standard, raising an awkward question for its own ProXDR display technology: if Android has a common HDR image format, does OPPO’s proprietary system still matter?

Google is building the ecosystem
Google introduced Ultra HDR support with Android 14 and documents the format as an image made from an SDR base plus HDR gain-map metadata. Google Photos and Google’s camera software are among the most important pieces of the ecosystem, while browser and editing support determine whether the format survives outside a phone’s built-in gallery.

The practical limitation is reach. ProXDR only works where OPPO’s hardware, software and gallery support it. A photo may look different on a compatible OPPO phone but lose that special treatment when opened in another app or on another device.
Ultra HDR has a broader ambition. It is not an OPPO-specific display mode; it is a format intended to travel with the image. That does not automatically make it better in every situation, but it gives developers and device makers a shared target.
Is ProXDR finished?
No — at least not based on the evidence available here. OPPO’s support for Ultra HDR could mean the company is adding an open format alongside ProXDR rather than replacing it. Proprietary processing may still be useful for capture, tone mapping and display calibration even when the finished image is exported as Ultra HDR.

Our opinion
Ultra HDR is the more important development because formats beat features when photos leave the phone. A display mode that only works in one manufacturer’s gallery is a neat demo; a gain map that survives the trip to Google Photos, Chrome and compatible editing software has a chance of becoming genuinely useful.
That does not mean OPPO has to throw ProXDR into the bin. The sensible move is to use ProXDR where it adds value on the handset and support Ultra HDR when images need to travel. Users should not have to care which branding produced the highlight detail — they should simply see a better photograph.
The real test will be consistency. If OPPO’s Ultra HDR support reaches the camera, gallery, sharing tools and third-party apps without flattening images back to SDR, it will be a welcome upgrade. Until then, ProXDR is not dead; it is simply facing an open standard that has a much better chance of escaping the showroom.
